SHORT HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepathology with its outpatient unit was founded in 1974. First Head of the department was Prof. Hasan Hadžijahić. Since then we started education of future gastroenterologists, most of them finished Postgraduate course at School of national health "Andrija Štampar” in Zagreb, University Medical Hospital Ljubljana, Slovenia, Hammersmith Hospital United Kingdom, Virchov Clinic Berlin, Germany, etc. Standard endoscopic methods became routine practice. Younger gastroenterologist acquired basic knowledge in known centers of former Yugoslavia as well as abroad. We established close cooperation with other departments in Medical Center, with Department of Radiology, Surgery, Pathology, and Immunology and with other Internal medicine departments.

First doctor thesis was one of Prof.dr. Hasan Hadžijahić in 1973, second Prof. Mehmed Gribajčević at Medical Hospital Rebro in Zagreb in 1984, Prof. Ismet Bratović 1986, Fehim Pašić, PhD, 1987, and Prof. Zora Vukobrat Bijedić 2001, Prof. Rusmir Mesihović 2002 and Nenad Vanis, PhD 2007.

After the retirement of Prof. Hasan Hadžijahić the head of the department became Prof.. Mehmed Gribajčević, and since 2008 Head of the Department has been Prof. Rusmir Mesihović while Prof. Mehmed Gribajčević is Head of Internal Medicine Departments at Clinical Medical Center Sarajevo.

As a reward for long and successful practice and a place as a leading department of gastroenterology in region, in October 2008 the modern equipped endoscopic rooms and educational center were opened. This is the first of this kind in Eastern Europe, in outpatient unit of Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Building of diagnostics CMCS.
